Dear All,
I am reading this : https://github.com/jgm/pandoc-citeproc
It says :
*Note: This package is no longer maintained. Pandoc now uses the citeproc
<https://github.com/jgm/citeproc> library, and no external filter is
needed.*
<https://github.com/jgm/pandoc-citeproc/actions>
This package provides a library and executable to facilitate the use of
citeproc with pandoc 1.12 and greater. (Earlier versions of pandoc have
integrated citeproc support.)
What I do not understand is :
Should not the LATER versions of pandoc have integrated citeproc support ?
How can the NEW citeproc library be integrated into the EARLIER versions
of pandoc?
Please clarify.
Thank you,
Ashim

IIUC, this means:
1. versions before 1.12 had integrated citeproc support (don’t know how exaclty).
2. versions beginning with 1.12 rely on an external library.
2a) first that was pandoc-citeproc
2b) now citeproc is used...
John will know the details, but that is how I’d understand this.
Best,
Denis

Dear Denis,
So if I get it right,
1. Versions before 1.12 did not have an external library. The citeproc
code was a part of pandoc.
2. Then this code was factored out in pandoc-citeproc.
3. Then citeproc was born out of (2).
Is that correct?
Many thanks,
Ashim

Yes.

Yes.

No. The new citeproc is a complete rewrite from scratch and does not depend on pandoc-citeproc.
But again, I may misunderstand something. Let's wait for John to clarify that.

Dear John and Denis,
I have a small query.
The following 2 incantations are generating the SAME demo.html:-
pandoc -F pandoc-crossref demo.md -o demo.html
--bibliography=sample-bibliography.bib
pandoc -F pandoc-crossref -F pandoc-citeproc demo.md -o demo.html
--bibliography=sample-bibliography.bib
My pandoc version is:
$ pandoc -v
pandoc 2.2.1
Compiled with pandoc-types 1.17.5.1, texmath 0.11.1, skylighting 0.7.5
Default user data directory: /home/ashim/.pandoc
Copyright (C) 2006-2018 John MacFarlane
Web: http://pandoc.org
This is free software; see the source for copying conditions.
There is no warranty, not even for merchantability or fitness
for a particular purpose.
My query is : Isn't it essential to use the pandoc-citeproc filter ?
In which version of pandoc is pandoc-citeproc vs citeproc used?
My sample-bibliography.bib contains this :-
@article{unprocessedCitation,
title = {Testing Pandoc},
author = {Kapoor,Ashim},
journal = {My Quarterly Journal},
pages = {1--110},
year = {2001},
publisher = {JSTOR}
}
I got demo.md from here :
wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/lierdakil/pandoc-crossref/master/docs/demo/demo.md
Thank you,
Ashim
