The default is the current directory; it's a bit clearer when looking at
the docs on GitHub:
https://github.com/jgm/pandoc/blob/main/doc/lua-filters.md#list_directory-pandocsystemlist_directory

It seems to me that the sentence-closing dot should be moved to the right of "(string)".
