Please see the "try pandoc" shown at the bottom of the message (markdown and HTML are shown below). It seems that the 'section' class must trigger some special HTML writer behaviour? Any thoughts?

PS, Ideally I'd prefer these divs not to be converted to sections, but I can live with that.
