Hi!

I've just noticed that my references.docx does not work with the latest 
commit c302bdc 
<https://github.com/jgm/pandoc/commit/c302bdcdbe97b38721015fe82403b2a8f488a702>. 
The predefined numbered header templates are not considered anymore and 
markdown header are just printed as plain text. It is probably related to 
the fix for 
#1968 (Fixes for multiple docx writer style bugs). Do I have to dump the 
references.docx again and modify it again according to my needs?

Reference.docx changed slightly, but headings should not be affected. What Word version do you use? Could you share your reference.docx?

Hi!

I'm using Word 2010 and 2013 on 32 bit and 64 bit Windows. Pandoc compiled
with either 32 bit or 64 bit GHC (latest).

Okay, I found the reason. Because previous versions of pandoc could not
work with non-English reference.docx, I switched the UI language of Word
and customized my reference.docx (1st attached file template_h.docx),
especially numbered headings. That was the only way to get it work with
pandoc 1.12.
After modification of reference.docx I changed the UI language of Word back
to German. Recently, I made some small modifications (justified text,
different font) with the German UI language of Word. This new
reference.docx (2nd attached file template_h10.docx) works still well with
pandoc 1.13.2 but not with the development version. Simply, the heading
formats are lost.
That is because '<w:pStyle w:val="TOC1" />' has been translated to
'<w:pStyle w:val="Verzeichnis1" />', for instance. Pandoc v1.13.2 doesn't
seem to have a problem with this, but v1.13.3.

I messed up *badly* there, sorry. Thank you very much for pointing this
out. Apparently, libreoffice is very lax about docx style interpretations,
that's why it slipped through. That and having a working fallback for when
Word decides to mess up reference docx...

I've created a pull request <https://github.com/jgm/pandoc/pull/2023> to
fix this problem -- let's hope someone merges it soon.

Yeah, it is merged and works so far. :-)

A similar problem is with footnote style (Footnote Ref). It is not formated 
as superscript anymore.

Some styles have been renamed to correspond with Normal.dotm, namely

   - Block Quote -> Block Text
   - Link -> Hyperlink
   - Footnote Ref -> Footnote Reference

See commit 1cb601d for details.

Try opening your reference.docx, setting some text to default "footnote
reference" style (not sure how's it called in German version) and saving it
as new reference.docx  (of course, you can just add a footnote instead).
You do need to have something set to this style for it to be included in
word output
