After more experimenting and researching, I found the cause. It looks like I had an old xcolor.sty installed that was not prepared to use the `svgnames` option (which must have recently been added to some part of pandoc?). I probably manually installed xcolor locally before it was in the general distribution or something, and pdflatex kept using that old one instead of the current texlive one. Removing my local copy solved the problem. Thanks again for the help & hints.
