Markup inside of epub metadata

Hello everyone!

Is it possible to insert markup (e.g., links, bold text, newlines) into 
EPUB "description" and "rights" metadata fields? For example, using 
Markdown or HTML?

The EPUB specification does not support those features.

It’s a long standing issue amongst the EPUB committee (of which I am a
member), but to make the change would be breaking to EPUB 3.x and the
committee is trying to avoid that.  FWIW: The biggest issue that is driving
this is not so much formatting - but the ability to specify language and
direction.
