You mean... the latex output without --standalone. (I had to think about
this, I don't usually omit that option)
Should we think about a command line option? like
--hr=line|asterisks|asterism|custom_string or even checking if something is
defined among metadata (but then, I don't know if the writer can access
metadata)?
