Thanks! Your solution works, but I cannot put text formatted with Markdown
between the \begin{center} ... \end{center} LaTeX tags.
It seems like Pandoc understands the HTML (e.g. <h1> ... </h1>), but just
refuses to acknowledge any alignment options specified.
