Ok, so forget about twoside. What happens if you add the following to "header-includes" in the metadata?

\usepackage{titleps}
\renewpagestyle{plain}{
  \sethead{}{}{}
  \setfoot[][][]{}{}{\thepage\ifodd\thepage\else\hfill\fi}
}
\pagestyle{plain}
