Pandoc allows pdf output supported by Latex beamer. This works fine for
standard themes. But for example theme "Madrid" insists on showing the
sectionname + secion number. Wheras I can delete the sectionname I fail to
drop the number.

Question: do you have any hints how I can suppress sectionname and section
number during pandoc beamer pdf output?

Have you tried:

# my title {.unnumbered}

(from https://pandoc.org/MANUAL.html#header-identifiers)

Yes, I did. Neither

# title {.unnumbered}
nor
# title {}

suppress the number for each beamer #-Title.

Still not sure what you mean. This works:

    echo '# Title' | pandoc -t beamer -o test.pdf -M theme=Madrid

Can you post a minimal example?

If there's a way to do it in plain LaTeX, you can usually do it in pandoc
as well. Either by using a template, or by using raw TeX inside your
markdown...

Thank you, this is exactly what I mean.
When I run your example I get a slide:

"
Section 1

Title (in blue "Madrid"-Box)
"

What I can:
Change the name "Section" to any other name, even an empty name.
What I can not:
Get rid of the figure "1".

When I choose a different theme (eg "Rochester") there is no "Section 1".

I use a header file, I can modify table and picture numbering -- but not
the Section numbers...

I cannot reproduce that. I don't get the "Section 1" in the PDF. Probably
it's something in your header file. Or maybe you're using a custom template?

I repeated the steps -- and get a slide with secion name and number.

1)
$ echo '# Title' | pandoc -t beamer -o test.pdf -M theme=Madrid

2)
My pandoc version:
$ pandoc --version
pandoc 2.4
Compiled with pandoc-types 1.17.5.1, texmath 0.11.1.2, skylighting 0.7.4

Please find attached the pdf I created (two pages, including a screendump).

Doesn't the section number belong to the beamer theme and not pandoc?
@mb21, I can't reproduce your numberless finding. Using the default
template that comes with pandoc, I get the section number.

Uh, maybe I've just an old version of the theme? I'm on pdfTeX

I've also attached my file...

It sounds reasonable ("Rochester does not show section number).

Then this is the wrong place to ask for help? Where else?

In the earlier example there's a section heading with
no content. If you add some content, you'll get a
regular slide rather than just a section heading slide.

echo -e '# Title\n\nHi' | pandoc -t beamer -o test.pdf -M theme=Madrid

No "Section 1".

If your document has no hierarchical structure (e.g.
all level-1 headers) then you won't get title slides
like "Section 1".

If you have hierarchical structure, you'll get these
slides. Their formatting (including the numbering)
seems to be theme dependent. I'm not sure why the
Madrid theme doesn't pay attention to

\setcounter{secnumdepth}{0}

in the latex pandoc produces. I suggest you
generate a .tex file using `-t beamer -s -o test.tex`
and ask a beamer expert whether there's a way to
avoid the section number.

I think I've spotted the bug, and posted it on the Github page:
https://github.com/jgm/pandoc/issues/5174#issuecomment-493665467

Pandoc is inserting the \usetheme command after customizing the output, and
that overrides the customizations. Maybe this is new behaviour for Beamer?

Actually, I think this isn't a bug. The Madrid style specifies that
particular section page style, so if you ask for Madrid, you should also
have to ask to override its choices if you don't like them, Pandoc
shouldn't do that automatically.

Sorry!
