Now that the latest versions of MS Word (and MS Office) can handle SVG
graphics directly:

https://superuser.com/questions/397644/inserting-svg-files-in-a-microsoft-word-document
https://support.office.com/en-us/article/edit-svg-images-in-microsoft-office-365-69f29d39-194a-4072-8c35-dbe5e7ea528c

How hard would it be for Pandoc to insert the SVGs directly into MS Word
documents? My specific use case is that I'd like to be able to generate
SVG graphics in R Markdown, and then convert the output to MS Word.

r/D.

hm.. can you post a minimal docx file that has an svg embedded? what
happens if you open such a file in older word versions?

Hi @mb21, sure.

Attached is a one-page docx with an embedded SVG. I don't know how it is
handled with an older version of Word. I don't have easy access to an
older version of MS Word, so I can't test it. I tried Googling to see what
happens and a blog post on imagebank.io
<https://imagebank.io/2016/11/finally-theres-support-for-svg-in-powerpoint-and-office/> says
that the SVG enabled versions of MS Word automatically embed a hi-res PNG
version of a static SVG for backward compatibility (with no answer about
what it does with animated SVG).

Thanks! I went looking for an "issue" on Github and didn't find this one.
Glad the Google Group did its job well here (and discouraged me from
creating my own new issue).
