Confirmed in 2.14.0.3. Looks like Pandoc does that by default except for 
select environments like align.

```markdown
asdofijasifasdf \begin{dummy} asdfasdf \end{dummy} easdafasg
```
is converted to LaTeX to:

```latex
asdofijasifasdf

\begin{dummy} asdfasdf \end{dummy}

easdafasg
```
