Compiling markdown to html not working with latex math accents

Hi, just a short question. Does anybody knows why this

$$ \sqrt{\frac{\sum_{i=1}^{n}\left(\hat{r}_{ui}-r_{ui}\right)^2}{n}} $$

does compile to pdf (using the latex writer) but it doesn't compile to 
html? I think the problem is with

$\hat{r}$

But I'm totally lost with any probable cause. The dollar signs are being 
escaped somehow.

My pandoc version is

pc@user$ pandoc --version
pandoc 1.19.2.1
Compiled with pandoc-types 1.17.0.4, texmath 0.9, skylighting 0.1.1.4
