Word field formula in reference docx not copied verbatim causing incorrect value in output

I've a DOCX reference doc that I'm using for MD to DOCX conversion. In the 
reference DOCX I created a footer field

Page { PAGE } of { = { NUMPAGES } - 1 }


But in my output DOCX the footer field looks like this

Page { PAGE } of { NUMPAGES - 1 }


Which does not render the correct number of pages in the document.

Is this a bug or a feature? If it's a feature, does anyone have the 
incantation that *will* work as intended?

that shows the problem), so we can have a look?

Even more interesting is that it changes my

 { = { SectionPages } - 1 }

to output: 

{ NumPages - 1 }

Tested with Pandoc 2.1.3 on macOS High Sierra 10.13.4

pandoc 2.1.3
Compiled with pandoc-types 1.17.4.2, texmath 0.10.1.1, skylighting 0.7.1
