beamer slides from markdown utf-8 characters don't display

Hello all, 

I have a markdown document produced by rmarkdown and slidify. I try to 
convert it to pdf slides with pandoc with this command:

pandoc -t beamer --latex-engine=xelatex --variable mainfont=Arial
--variable sansfont=Arial index.md -o index.pdf

The document is in Greek, with UTF-8 encoding. Converting it to pdf without 
beamer displays fine - though not in slide form. But when I try to produce 
slides with the -t beamer option, only capital Greek letters, and English 
text do display. I played around with the font, but the problem persists, 
even though I am sure that the fonts I chose support Greek characters, and 
work with non-beamer conversions.

Any ideas?
