thanks.  this does not work for me, because the backslash seems to be 
escaped:

     $ pandoc -s -M header-includes='\usepackage{abc}' -o sample.tex 
sample.md
     $ grep abc pandoctbl.tex
     \textbackslash usepackage\{abc\}
