Mark: thanks for pointing that out. If I find myself with some spare time I might give it a shot, but for the moment I think that would be a lot of work for a fairly brittle and special-case solution.

John: thanks for weighing in. I think a command-line option would be great. Obviously it'd be ideal if everything just worked with any environment, but that'd be asking a lot of tex (and you!)
