I'll admit that ordering sounds a bit dubious to me anyway, but pdflatex 
did not abort execution in this case. Having \textit inside of \caption is 
fine. I wonder if this should be changed to a warning or ignored? I don't 
know enough latex to say for sure.

Another thought that may be easier said than done (certainly detecting it 
may be the challenging aspect), would be for pandoc to just remove 
formatting commands like \textit if they appear to cause problems, as a 
last resort, and issue a warning.
