I looked in the docs but could not find it.
Is there a way in pandoc to enter Unicode (i.e., say, U+1F48A) via the
hexcode and pandoc converts it into the appropriate character upon
conversion (powerpoint, beamer, html, etc.) ?

I think you can use html entities.
