Is there a way of getting automatic nested numbering in Pandoc Markdown?

Example

#. Animal
  #.# Duck
  #.# Panda
#. Plant
  #.# Sunflower

would become

1. Animal
  1.1 Duck
  1.2 Panda
2. Plant
  2.1 Sunflower

This is something I really miss from Markdown and would love if Pandoc 
supported.
