Re: alphabetic characters preceded by backslash (\) are ignored

Oh, right.  If you're using `-f markdown`, then `\a` is treated
as a raw tex command.  Turn this off using `-f markdown-raw_tex`
or use `commonmark` or `gfm`.  Thanks Rik.
