The attributes can be specified in pandoc markdown as follows:

# Heading {#identifier .class1 .class2 key="value"}

or in a code block

``` {#identifier .class1 .class2 key="value"}
```

Note that

``` ruby
````

is equivalent to

``` {.ruby}
```

The classes are like HTML classes, and are rendered that way
in HTML.  In other formats you can use a filter to do something
special with them if you like.
