List,

Does there exist in pandoc/pandoc-citeproc a means to generate what
Biblatex terms secular date eras? (Option dateera=secular, default is
dateera=christian.)

Even better, is there a way to specify the strings to be used (beyond
possible language-dependent variations)? I would prefer to have a
non-breaking thinspace followed by smallcap bce/ce.

Currently, I handle this with an editor script, but would prefer to do it
'right' from the start.

Put this in your CSL file:

    <locale>
      <terms>
        <term name="bc">BCE</term>
      </terms>
    </locale>

The locale element goes under the style element.

See locales/locale-en-US.xml for all of the defaults.

In the binary we distribute, these are just baked into
the binary to make it self-contained, and there is no
way to override them.

If pandoc-citeproc is compiled without the
embed_data_files flag, then they will be somewhere
else.  I think in

    $PREFIX/share/$ARCH-$OS-$GHCVERSION/pandoc-version/

You should be able to modify the terms used by adding

   <term name="ad">CE</term>
   <term name="bc">BCE</term>

or, if you prefer some kind of space in front of the terms (note that an ordinary space char will not work, but a non-breaking or thin space char will)

   <term name="ad"> CE</term>
   <term name="bc"> BCE</term>

to the <terms> element of a CSL style file, or for a more general solution, to the config file for your preferred locale, e.g., locales-en-US.xml.

Unfortunately, I can’t seem to figure out where the locales-xx-XX.xml files used at runtime are supposed to be located – but maybe @jgm can weigh in here.

List,

In a bibliography generated with pandoc-citeproc, I would like to have
BCE and CE instead of BC and AD.

Biblatex supports this through the dateera option -- dateera=secular
gives BCE and CE, but the default is dateera=christian. This is not
honored via pandoc-citeproc, and I see no corresponding option to
achieve the effect.

Even better would be a way to get \textsc{bce} and \textsc{ce}.

Are the (perhaps language-local) literals accessible for user
modification? I realize that this can all be handled by a filter applied
to the generated bibliography, but I would prefer to do it 'right' from
the start.
