* Md to Md: How to always use asterisk * for emphasis?

When I convert markdown to Markdown, the `*` used for emphasis gets 
converted to underscore?

- Can I prevent this behavior? (i.e. Can I preserve `*` for emphasis?)
- Is there a way to convert all `_` used for emphasis back to `*`?
