clearly the wrong answer is to use -1 as a value for fd_out,
since this is supposed to be "1" at the end of a pipe.

also it's probably a bad idea to debate rc implementation
details on this list since 90% of the people don't give a
damn.

(The solution will probably involve setting up explicit
flags for end-of-pipe, and so on, but I'm not going to
work on that right now.)
