This was exactly the same way I was going around one and a half years
ago. :-)

Now I'm away from LFS: I am using slashpackage-foreign
<URL:http://multivac.cwru.edu./spf/> to install my packages, unifying
the power of building from source tarballs with the distincness of a
slashpackage file system layout <URL:http://cr.yp.to/slashpackage.html>.

Paul Jarc - directly using svscan as a replacement for init
<URL:http://multivac.cwru.edu./svscan-1/> - has a nice solution at
<URL:http://multivac.cwru.edu./svscan-1/init>. Look for the shell
function try_().
