Subject: runit-init stage 1: where does stdout go?

Hi,
I'm trying runit-1.4.0 on a self-made linux system.
runit-init seems to redirect stdout, as I'm not seeing
any boot messages echoed by the stage 1 script,
only the kernel messages.
How do I get them back to the console?
