As for duplication of effort, I'm not sure anybody cared. Certainly RMS didn't give a rats ass. I suspect some of the stuff came from sources outside of both projects, like stuff we did at BRL (although, those using that tape need to be careful, most of that stuff came right out of the system V sources, hacked over to work on BSD).
