What's the correct troff command line to format this?

It was dreary and wearisome. Cold clammy winter still held sway in this
forsaken country. The only green was the scum of livid weed on the dark
greasy surfaces of the sullen waters. Dead grasses and rotting reeds loomed
up in the mists like ragged shadows of long-forgotten summers.

First, edit post.tm and change the PO font to CW. Then

	refer post.tm | pic | troff -ms | ps2pdf - post.pdf

I sent Warren (off list) a copy that I dorked with a bit, using groff and
the original V7 ms macros to produce a farily authentic looking Bell Labs
style memorandum. He answered that he is out of the country but will
deal with putting things into the archive when he gets back.

Thanks,

Arnold

I changed the line terminators to LFs and removed the undefined .TM
macro in line 3 of post.tm. I then got these errors from troff:

post.tm:116: macro error: unknown reference type `5'
post.tm:208: macro error: unknown reference type `5'

Dr. Google can provide no explanation of these. Lines 116 and 208 (or
117 and 209 of the original source) are ordinary lines of text with
no special controls.

Then I get the following error from ps2pdf:

Error: /undefined in x
Operand stack:

Execution stack:

GPL Ghostscript 9.06: Unrecoverable error, exit code 1

The resulting PDF contains a single blank page.

I'm using groff 1.21 and GPL Ghostscript 9.06.

I have put a copy rendered on plan9 which looks OK, though
the Lucent logo doesn't fit properly on the cover sheet and
looks a bit out of character with the age of the paper,
but it will do until somone generates a better one.

take a look at your file content, this is not postscript, but ditroff
intermediate output.

using DWB, the dpost filter should be added.

refer post.tm | pic | troff -ms | dpost | ps2pdf - post.pdf

using GROFF, groff should be used instead of troff.

refer post.tm | pic | groff -ms | ps2pdf - post.pdf

using DWB, the AT&T Bell Labs logo looks perfect ;^)

PS : DWB is here :

http://www2.research.att.com/~gsf/download/tgz/dwb.1993-02-04.tgz

to build DWB under cygwin, use this patch :

http://cyrillelefevre.free.fr/dwb/dwb.1993-02-04.2011-05-29.patch.bz2

also, DWBHOME should be exported to the installation path.

also, as someone on the list did me, the output was incomplete !

first of, forgot to say that DWB is missing refer, so I use the GNU one.
after some investigations, I found that DWB pic eat a great part
of the initial document. the use of GNU pic -n solve the problem.
refer may be used w/ or w/o the -e option, I prefer w/o.

the final commands are :

export DWBHOME=/opt/dwb

ln -s CW $DWBHOME/lib/font/devpost/PO

dos2unix < post.tm |
refer | pic -n |
/opt/dwb/bin/troff -ms |
/opt/dwb/bin/dpost |
tee post.ps | ps2pdf - post.pdf

using DWB, the AT&T Bell Labs logo looks perfect ;^)
