You know, i liked that so much when i have heard this first that
the BSD Mail i maintain uses the following as a catch-all error:

  ?0!0/NONE[#/var/spool/mail/steffen]? echo \
      $^ERR-1000: $^ERRNAME-1000: $^ERRDOC-1000
  255: NOTOBACCO: Snorkeling on empty pipe
