BYTE Paperbytes, Cauzin Softstrips, etc.

But 2D bar codes have come a long way since then.

I'd say the larger problems are that laser toner doesn't stick enough, or sticks 
to other pages especially under heat or pressure or time, and inkjet ink is expensive 
and water-soluble.
