TOPS-20 had a way to attach and detach from a PTY. But they didn't keep the state of the screen... programs did, but not the kernel.
That makes sense and is probably what I remember. The big difference when the 8/16 micros came along what the built-in display and thus the need to create a "terminal emulator."
