I see a stylistic connection between the style of writing of the manuals and the New York journalism, especially that of the New Yorker.
Oh that's really interesting; as a New Yorker who subscribes to the New Yorker, this makes so much sense and is certainly more sensible than my hypothesized connection with Warhol and the Factory.
