Executives at tech companies rarely understand "what they have" in my
experience.

The Son/ATT "merger" terrified the industry, so much so that a bunch of
people got together and created the Open Software Foundation. The feeling
was that ATT had superior technology, and Sun could build and sell it.
Perhaps that first part was wrong, but many felt that way.
