Unix folk were barely involved in the branding or advertising of the
system. I recall that we got to proofread and edit the first Unix ad, but
essentially nothing later. Nor did we contribute to the cover designs of
the 7th edition trade verson or the 8th-10th in-house versions of the
manual.

Thanks Doug (and Arnold Robbins in another stream)!  Doug I tossed up the cover scans you sent me some time ago here: https://wiki.tuhs.org/doku.php?id=publications:manuals:research

The other pages under publications:manuals that I've filled out also have photographs of covers from my bookshelf.  I figured what you described was the case, I don't know anything about the "face" of our stuff at work until someone gives me a logo to put on a site or application somewhere, I can't imagine most technical folks give a hoot what mask their products wear when they step out in the world.
