Just saw this in a tweet by Charlie Stross: How AT&T's Bell Labs became infected with crabs (in 1985): http://lucacardelli.name/Papers/Crabs.pdf Cheers, Warren

Sheer genius in its simplicity of implementation! For some reason I am
reminded of "xroach": I used to surprise my cow-orkers with it...

And the source is amazingly simple; mind you, most of the work is done by
the libraries.

You can run it under plan9ports. git clone https://github.com/9fans/plan9port.git cd plan9ports ./INSTALL # You may have to setenv PLAN9 to the above dir. I am not sure. tar xf crabs.tgz cd crabs # fix an unnamed parameter ed crabs.c <<EOF /main/s/int/int argc/ wq EOF 9c crabs.c 9l crabs.o a.out This will be about as exciting sa watching ants move about on a white wall. May be less.

Thanks for the pointer.

This explains something, I think! Luca Cardelli and Mark Manasse later worked at the Digital Systems Research Center in Palo Alto, which was formed in 1984 after PARC fired Bob Taylor. Mark helped write the window system we used, and at some point a cat appeared, which would sleep until you moved the mouse and then come over to pat at the mouse. My impression was that Luca wrote it, be he was cagy about it. This later evolved into xneko for X Windows. -Larry

There were lots of similar programs springing up around that time, such as
"xoj" (modelled after the famous O.J. Simpson car chase) etc.
