/dev/tty existed in Version 6 for sure.   It wasn't the console but 
rather a magic device that mapped to the processes "controlling 
terminal."

Just checked the V5 and V6 sources in the archive.   /dev/tty indeed 
showed up there.   The driver is in dmr/sys.c.
