There was Peter Langston=E2=80=99s Empire that had a huge following at BRL.= We=20 thought we had it in check because the game had it=E2=80=99s own limits on= how=20 much you could play it you were limited to 60 minutes of clock time a=20 day and how many BTUs (bureaucratic time units) your capital made. =20 The problem was people would spend their time online downloading maps=20 and then spend the afternoon pouring over tomorrows moves. The=20 director finally made us shut it down. There was a multiplayer game called =E2=80=9Csearch=E2=80=9D that we would= play. Late=20 in the day you=E2=80=99d hear someone yell =E2=80=9CSearch=E2=80=99s up=E2= =80=9D and off we go. Then we got the SGI workstations and flew the flight simulator. They=20 had a multiplayer dogfight but it used XNS which our network wasn=E2=80=99t= =20 going to handle (at least not off the local subnet). I recoded it to=20 use TCP. Rather than using broadcast packets, each =E2=80=9Cairplane=E2=80= =9D opened a=20 connection to a server I called =E2=80=9CAir Traffic Control.=E2=80=9D Fr= om there I=20 could watch the whole thing. I also added an anti-aircraft gun to=20 shoot at people hanging around the airfield waiting to attack aircraft=20 that newly appeared in the game there.
