Debian still supports nvidia340 and will support it in the next release. And even after the next one, as you can see [here](https://packages.debian.org/ru/buster/nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver). So, yes, if you really need nvidia driver you can switch to it. I'm running Debian on my other machines and servers, it's awesome.

Just install Debian from the netinst.iso and use `--no-install-recommends` in the APT's settings. It will be as minimal as you want it to.
