Ok, I figured this out - in order to update the other packages I had to do 

    sudo xbps-reconfigure -a

In order to get mariadb properly configured I had to stop the service first, so

    sudo sv down mysqld
    sudo xbps-reconfigure -f mariadb

Made everything work!!
