I really haven't tried using sphinx; in #34030 I'm not worrying about building documentation. I think it's fair if we can merge sagemath without documentation which is available online in any case.

I'm not sure why I patched sagemath to use sphinx 4.3 instead of 4.2; it's possible that it still works if I remove that patch so it doesn't depend on this PR.

There's nothing about sphinx 4.4 on the sagemath trac.
