See https://www.gnu.org/software/gawk/manual/html_node/Persistent-Memory.html. Given that this feature is experimental, maybe it should just be disabled? If we're keeping it, we should disable PIE only on systems supporting persistent malloc which, according to that link, are "64-bit systems supporting the mmap() and munmap() system calls." Which systems are those?
