A little update here:

1. I was unable to replicate this bug with `mplayer`, hinting at a `vlc`-specific bug when interacting with `sway` WM. 
2. After the recent `wlroots` update https://github.com/void-linux/void-packages/pull/41367 I am unable to replicate this bug at all, even with `vlc`

Whatever it was, this obscure bug has probably been solved by the `wlroots` update. No idea why, since update changelog is fairly small, yet here I am. 

Closing this for now. Anyone else is free to re-open if this occurs again.
