I've done some further work. It still isn't working though.

I kinda agree with lemmi, `weechat-matrix` results in more trouble than it's worth. The project requires heavy patching and [maintainership status is unclear](https://github.com/poljar/weechat-matrix/issues/359). I'm closing this.
