Openbox does not depend on wayland. Several other packages do, like "gtk+3" and "xorg-server". It was probably just pulled in as a dependency for something else. You may already have the X server installed but to use the "startx" command you need to install the "xinit" package. It is a dependency of "xorg-minimal" but will not be included if you take another route to installing X.

Dependencies in this area are deliberately kept a little lax, I assume, to allow for more freedom of choice when installing and configuring X.
