I just installed i686 base system on my IBM Thinkpad T43 and noticed that
installing Openbox triggers Wayland instead of X11. I wasn't expecting that
at all and would like to ask if this is OK? Or something regarding Openbox
dependencies is broken? And BTW, how do I start "X" (or rather Wayland)
session now?

Huh. I hadn't noticed this. I mean, I know Wayland is installed, but
running Openbox with lightdm, my X session starts just fine.
What packages did you install before attempting to start your session?
BTW, startx starts X.

Yes, I know that I just type 'startx' to enter graphical mode, but in my
case there is no 'startx' command. Installing Openbox didn't trigger X11
but Wayland. And that's why I posted this issue here.

You may try installing x11 or xorg or whatever X is masquerading as, wayland may have been set up as a dependency to OpenBox.

This all brings us back to my initial question- what packages have you
installed?

I have X running with xorg-minimal, xorg-fonts, xterm and xclock installed.

openbox doesn't depend on xorg-server because x11 is network transparent
and wayland not.
Install xorg or xorg-minimal to have a local xserver.

Did you read my last post before responding? Doesn't sound like it. Or,
you've responded to the wrong post.

OK, so I have to install X11. And that means that dependencies on Openbox
are misconfigured. I hope someone will fix this. (AFAIK, openbox cannot
ever run in Wayland)

I don't think the dependencies are misconfigured. Not everyone will want to
install X the same way, such as the minimalist way I suggested.
I think, in this case, they've done it right.

Install xorg-minimal, xorg-fonts, xterm and xclock, for a minimalist
install (if you want minimalist), and you should be good to go.

BTW, X won't start without xterm and xclock.
Been there, done that.

Openbox does not depend on wayland. Several other packages do, like "gtk+3"
and "xorg-server". It was probably just pulled in as a dependency for
something else. You may already have the X server installed but to use the
"startx" command you need to install the "xinit" package. It is a
dependency of "xorg-minimal" but will not be included if you take another
route to installing X.

Dependencies in this area are deliberately kept a little lax, I assume, to
allow for more freedom of choice when installing and configuring X.
