It's not exactly what you were asking for, but since the installer is a 
shell-script you can simply edit it, comment out the call for 
"set_bootloader" and then run it. You will still be asked to select a disk 
to install the bootloader but it won't actually be installed. Not pretty, 
but it will do the trick.
