I think I hear the feeping of creatures in the distance....

I suspect that you should stick with 8-character tabs.  I tried using
4-character tabs back when I was using jove (that was, gee, 1988?),
and it just drove me up the wall.  Too much text formatting assume tab
stops occur every 8 characters.
