We've had a few cases where we found WireGuard unexpectedly deactivated on company laptops at employee homes. Upon review of the logs, it looks like DNS resolution failed for an extended time during startup, and the service eventually gave up: 2021-01-24 15:23:08.253716: [TUN] [SCJ] Watching network interfaces 2021-01-24 15:23:08.287522: [TUN] [SCJ] Resolving DNS names 2021-01-24 15:23:08.324339: [TUN] [SCJ] Host not found when resolving a.redacted.host.name, but no Internet connection available, sleeping for 4 seconds 2021-01-24 15:23:08.481848: [MGR] Update checker: The server name or address could not be resolved 2021-01-24 15:23:12.336376: [TUN] [SCJ] Host not found when resolving a.redacted.host.name, but no Internet connection available, sleeping for 4 seconds ... 2021-01-24 15:25:40.566827: [TUN] [SCJ] Host not found when resolving a.redacted.host.name, but no Internet connection available, sleeping for 4 seconds 2021-01-24 15:25:44.567990: [TUN] [SCJ] Host not found when resolving a.redacted.host.name, but no Internet connection available, sleeping for 4 seconds 2021-01-24 15:25:48.571438: [TUN] [SCJ] Unable to resolve one or more DNS hostname endpoints: No such host is known. 2021-01-24 15:25:48.572667: [TUN] [SCJ] Shutting down 2021-01-24 15:25:48.576621: [MGR] [SCJ] Tunnel service tracker finished I suspect this is due to the laptop lacking internet access for some time after its been turned on. Some staff connect over mobile hotspots and some have poor WiFi within the home. It looks like the laptops later gain an internet connection, but the tunnel is left in its deactivated state until someone intervenes. I've attached logs from two different computers that seem to have encountered this. Both are running WireGuard for Windows 0.3.4. If you'd like an unredacted copy of the logs I'd be happy to send them along off-list. If this is working as intended we'll create some sort of separate governor to monitor tunnel health. I figured I should raise the issue in case the DNS resolution retry/backoff policy should be revisited. Thanks! Joshua Sjoding SCJ Alliance IT Specialist www.scjalliance.com
