OK, obviously I haven't been understanding what you're doing.

I thought you meant
    ssh -> zsh -> function -> function runs command -> HUP ssh

But now I think you mean
    zsh -> function -> function runs ssh -> ssh runs command -> HUP zsh

So can you please describe EXACTLY what you're doing, step by step?
